The 10 Most Reliable Used Cars in the UK Under £10,000 in 2018

Buying a car can be a daunting task.

You want to make sure that you’re getting value for money but also something stylish, practical and entertaining whilst you’re at it. Critically, one of the biggest factors that consumers look at when purchasing a second hand vehicle is the reliability of it.

It’s for that reason that, using data from Auto Express’ Driver Power Survey we have listed the most reliable used cars for under £10k that we could find on AutoTrader. Take a look at the list below and the pros and cons of these reliable second hand motors that you can pick up for a bargain!

1. Peugeot 3008 Mk2 (2016 - Present)

Find Genuine Peugeot Car Parts

Number 1 on our list of the most reliable used cars under £10,000 is the Peugeot 3008. As the most reliable used SUV and car in general in the UK, you’d expect it to excel in its practicality and smooth drive, and it certainly doesn’t let you down.

But it’s not just the huge boot and spacious interiors where the Peugeot 3008 is head and above its competitors, it also looks beautiful from all angles. The 3008 also provides a surprisingly good MPG for such a large car so those long trips away won’t be too hard on your wallet!

Is there a downside? Not really! One issue that has cropped up previously is that if something is to go wrong it will be connected to the electrics in some way. But the likelihood of that happening compared to all the other cars in this list is low and as it’s top of the pile, you know you’re getting an incredibly reliable set of wheels.

2. Skoda Octavia Mk3 (2013 - Present)

The Skoda Octavia is next up on our list and it scored well on a number of different fronts. It goes without saying that if you’re in this list you score highly for reliability but it’s not just that where the Octavia is highly rated.

It’s also incredibly practical with a surprising amount of room inside compared to when you take a look at the car from a distance. Incredibly comfy, the Octavia also steers, brakes and handles like a dream, though some critics have labelled the drive as a little bumpy.

The other main downsides would have to be problems with transmission and the fact that the car’s exterior doesn’t quite match up to others in this list.

3. Nissan Juke Mk1 (2010 - 2014)

Find Genuine Nissan Car Parts

The first small crossover available in the UK, the Nissan Juke is a popular car on our roads and you can pick up a used one today for just under 10k. Whilst it might let you down in the comfort of the drive and the storage space on offer, to be able to get such a striking car for such a low price really is amazing.

Not only is the Juke incredibly reliable, the great technology onboard makes it very safe and secure too. Running costs are surprisingly efficient too and you’ll be doing your bit for the environment if you pick the right model.

4. Kia Sportage Mk 4 (2015 - Present)

Another SUV in our list, the Kia Sportage is stylish and packed full of features to keep the gadget fans happy. With a top tier entertainment and information system, the interior of the Sportage is unrivalled in terms of tech but it could be described as rather bland in style.

The drive and running costs of the Sportage are also fairly average compared to others in this list but it makes up for that with a lot of space and storage options. Not only that, but just take one look at this reliable SUV and you’ll realise that the sub-£10k price tag is nothing. It’s a very nice looking car.

5. Volkswagen Golf Mk7 (2013 - 2017)

The Volkswagen Golf is a much loved car in the UK and you can purchase your own used version for well under the £10,000 budget. These family hatchbacks look great on the eye whether you’re part of a small family or if you’re a younger person trying to impress your pals.

With an excellent engine and superb refinement the Golf completely blows other family hatchback rivals out the water when it comes to value for money. Whilst some competitors may be slightly better to drive and more roomy, these certainly aren’t big cons and the VW Golf is most definitely one of the most reliable family hatchbacks in the UK in 2018.

6. Toyota Auris Mk2 (2012 - Present)

Another Family Hatch to make our top ten list, the Toyota Auris is a reliable motor that’s very cheap to run. With plenty of space in the front and a bunch of top notch tech the interior is hard to rival but from a style perspective, a lot of the competition do a better job.

The same can be said for the outside and it’s really the overall look of the car which is probably it’s biggest downside. You can also definitely get cars that have better handling and smoother drives for the £10,000 price limit but when you take the reliability of the Auris into account it really is a bargain.

7. Nissan Qashqai Mk2 (2014 - Present)

Find Genuine Nissan Car Parts

The Nissan Qashqai is a reliable, value-priced SUV and a car that has the aesthetics of a 4×4 at the same price as a family hatchback. I’m sure you’ve seen these cars on our roads as they’re one of the best selling cars in the UK despite it being over 10 years since Nissan launched them.

A quiet and smooth drive, the Qashqai is full of tech and plush interiors as well as being economical and practical too. However, if you’re picking holes in this UK favorite, then you’d point to the surprisingly little room and small boot for a car of its size as a criticism.

8. Vauxhall Mokka Mk1 (2012 - 2016)

The Vauxhall Mokka Mk1 is towards the end our most reliable used cars of 2018 list but it certainly competes with those around it. A good cruiser, the cool exterior styling and overall practicality of the Mokka is where it excels.

The interior packing is pretty impressive too for the price you’re paying and it comes with some great tech including the OnStar system. Most importantly, the Vauxhall Mokka isn’t the most exciting car to drive and it’s unlikely that your used car will keep its value despite the amazing reliability.

9. Mazda3 Mk3 (2013 - Present)

The penultimate car on our list is the Mazda 3 and it’s the tight handling and sheer amount of kit you get for your budget that makes this car one of the best in its category. For a starters, just take one look at this car and you’ll realise how smart it is. Before you even jump into the hot seat and drive the Mazda3 you’re struck by its style.

Whilst being very fun to drive, reliable and good looking, it does let you down with a lack of space in the front and back, poor rear visibility and high emissions compared to competitors.

10. Ford Kuga Mk2 (2012 - Present)

The last incredibly reliable car on our list is the Ford Kuga and there's certainly no shame in finishing towards the bottom of this list! Two huge positives off the bat are the stunning ride and handling of this vehicle.

Not only that, but there's plenty of rear space for rear passengers although competitor models may have more boot space. There's also a whole host of technology in this car which is unprecedented for the budget.
