Antifreeze, or coolant, is the liquid that you put into your vehicle’s cooling system. Making sure this liquid is kept at the correct level will ensure that your vehicle operates correctly. The antifreeze that we use in our cars is there to perform two functions.

What does Antifreeze do?

The first function is to make sure that your engine doesn’t overheat. Overheating could occur if you have don’t have coolant, which could cause serious damage to your engine. The second function is to aid with the heating on your vehicle’s interior. Having the correct amount of coolant will also ensure that your car heater works efficiently.

How to Choose the Best Antifreeze for your Car

Antifreeze can vary from car to car, however, the first basic rule of thumb is that if your vehicle is manufactured after 1998, silicate free antifreeze is often recommended. If your vehicle is produced before 1998 then antifreeze containing silicate is often recommended. Antifreeze is usually mixed with water to prevent freezing. It also raises the boiling point so that it will prevent overheating

Antifreeze helps to prevent corrosion and will help to prolong the life of your engine’s cooling system although it won't eliminate rust that is already there.

Can my car take any Antifreeze?

You may be wondering, is all antifreeze the same? Put simply, no. There are many different types of antifreeze to choose from and it is very important that you put the correct antifreeze in your vehicle, as there is no single antifreeze that will suit all makes and models. Your manufacturer will have a recommended list of antifreeze /coolant types that are compatible with your vehicle. If you are reluctant to go to your main dealer to find out the recommended product, the correct type of coolant can be identified by checking with either your main dealer or by checking in your workshop manual.

Where in a car do you put Antifreeze?

Your car handbook will show you the exact location that you need to put the Antifreeze into. This is called the coolant reservoir and is typically located under the bonnet.

Most cars have a minimum and maximum line written on the side of the coolant reservoir making it super simple to top up. However, before removing the cap, make sure your engine is cool as the antifreeze can get very hot.

When to Flush your Cars Coolant

It is recommended that every 2 years you flush the coolant from your radiator. This might not be the case with all vehicle manufacturers, but it’s a general rule of thumb to follow when thinking about the maintenance of the cooling system in your vehicle. Flushing the system is similar to when you have an engine oil and filter change, as over time, sludge can build up in the cooling system of your vehicle. This is nothing to worry about as it is a normal part of the life of your system.

It is generally recommended that you should flush the cooling system every two years.

It is important to identify the correct type of antifreeze for your vehicle to safeguard your cooling system and ensure the longevity of your car. You can check your owners manual to work out the best ratio mix of Antifreeze and water for your car depending on local weather conditions.
