- The 1997 Toyota Avensis had three body styles (saloon, hatchback and estate) and original came with three petrol engine options and turbo diesel engine option. The 2000 faclift saw the engines were fitted with variable valve timing, satellite navigation was included as a standard feature along the range and the sporty Avensis 2.0 L SR (with body kit and tuned suspension) was added.
- For the 2000 version, the 8 engine options were the petrol 1.6L 4A-FE 81 kW, 1.6L VVT-i 3ZZ-FE, 1.8L 7A-FE, 1.8L VVT-i 1ZZ-FE , 2.0L 3S-FE, and 2.0L D4 VVT-i 1AZ-FSE and the two diesels engines 2.0L TD 2C-TE and 2.0L D-4D 1CD-FTV.
- The 2006 facelift saw the inclusion of turn signals in the side mirrors, an MP3/WMA/ASL-ready audio system, new front bumper, and a new grille. Interior materials and cloth seats were also changed.
